Wrestling With the Lord
Our Christian faith is one which causes us to wrestle with God, as Jacob did with the Lord. We must take every thought captive, making it obedient to Christ, and we have to struggle against the sin that remains within our members - sin in both doctrine and in life. As I've heard it preached and taught, our wrestling with God is our sanctification as we war against the flesh and for constant communion with Him in the Word and prayer to Him to help us hate our sin even more and love Him all the more; that we would lean on Him, and less on things. Oh, how we love things. And how we idolize people- children, husbands, friends, etc. We idolize food, clothing, money and our looks. We have to remember that all these things come from God who is able to take them away from us; and He will do that if He knows it will teach us to love Him more. When we feel we cannot lean anymore or give anymore, we must lean harder and give more; and not grow weary and bitter. Bitterness is especially horrible for women, since the tone of the home, the neighborhood and society depends on our tenderness and hospitality. It needs our sweetness and kindness.
It's taken me a long time to learn that my husband is much more satisfied with a content wife than with a clean house. The Lord has used him to wash me with water and the Word a lot in this area! As with disciplining children, we must discipline ourselves in the area of the heart - not the behavior. Are we eating too much? The problem is not eating or the food, but the heart. How the world loves to give us diet plans and exercise regiments, while not bad in and of themselves, they all too often just let us focus on ourselves even more. Whatever the problem is, let us drop to our knees in prayer... let us stop striving because we do not have, as the apostle James rebukes. This is our wrestling... to choose God over our sin... tiny sins... little foxes... a little leaven. We have the armor of God in the promises of our salvation, and we have the Holy Spirit to give us the ability to choose what is biblical over what is unbiblical.
I remember a cartoon where a woman asked, "How am I supposed to enjoy the little things in life when so many big things are wrong and evil?" My question is, how can we afford to let little inconveniences get to us when God is so big and good? He's bigger than all of these annoyances that bog us down. We can rest in Him.
